The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is a large Governmental Research Centre that belongs to the Ministry of Development and Investments, under the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. Thus, is the main organization for Oceanographic, Fisheries and Inland Waters, Marine Biology and Genetics and Aquaculture research in Greece, constituted of three relevant institutes: the Institute for Oceanography, the Institute of Fisheries and Inland Waters, and the Institute of Marine Biology, Genetics and Aquaculture. The staff totals approximately 480 people comprising researchers, scientists, technicians, administrative and secretarial employees. The combination of baseline and applied research and the specialization of the scientific staff in various disciplines ensure a global, multidisciplinary approach, which makes the HCMR a leading establishment in aquatic environment research.
