Department of Economics

The participation of DUTh in the Project “Intelligent Research Infrastructure for Shipping, Supply Chain, Transport and Logistics (EN.I.R.I.S.S.T.)” implemented by the Department of Economics. Associate Professor Mr Dimitrios Dimitriou is the scientific supervisor of the project. The research team, under the supervision of Mr. Dimitriou, participates in the undergraduate programs of the Department of Economics with emphasis on Transport Economics and Decision Making Theory, and participates in the Postgraduate Programs ‘Master of Business Administration (MBA)’ (Department of Economics, DUTh), MSc in Hydrocarbon Exploration and Exploitation (AUTH) and ‘Occupational Health and Safety’ (Department of Medicine, DUTh), in subjects of transport infrastructure management, health infrastructure and energy transmission systems. In addition, the research team is responsible for organizing the International Conference on “Intermodal Transports: Innovation in Planning, Management, Business Development & Decision Making” (https://vip4ride.com/mission/ ), which is held every 3 years.

Prof. Associate Dimitrios DIMITRIOU: Dimitiros Dimitriou (Prof/Dr) educational background includes doctorate (PhD) in econometric modelling for quantitative air transport forecasting on seasonal destinations, MSc in Airport Planning and Management, MSc in Infrastructures Environmental Management, and Diploma (equivalent to 4 years BA and 1-year MSc) in Civil Engineering (transportation sector). His 22 years’ professional experience shared on 3 pillars of activities: education, research and management. His specialization focuses on planning, management and economics in transport, providing dedicated expertise in air transport sector. He is Associate Professor in Department of Economics, Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh), Greece, on subject of quantitative analysis in transport infrastructure development, providing dedicated educational and professional courses in many Greek and European Universities and professional institutions. His research outputs include more than 150 papers publications in scientific missions, events and conferences, and he has contributed in 21 research projects in which 2 as project leader. Also, he contributes in many scientific journals’ editions, editorial boards, scientific committees in international conferences and scientific missions. His professional truck record includes the occupation of executive management positions in sector of transports (10); delivery of dedicated studies (13); and consulting in a variety of infrastructure projects providing evidence of his expertise in fields of air transport economics and large transport projects-investments appraisal, economic impact analysis and effective management for authorities, organisations and enterprises, promoting a strong international profile in management, business economics, project financing, and risk management in transportation sector. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors (2016-date) at Athens International Airport and member of the Board of Directors since 2015, contributing in one of the most profitable companies and processing one of the larger privatiations in Greece. He was Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer in Athens Transports Organisation (3 years/2010-2012). Also, he is member of international expert and management committees in international associations and professional bodies (UNECE etc.). His professional achievements and experience has been acknowledged nationally and internationally, and for 2018 he awarded by the Professional Achievement Award (2017/2018) in Greece by the British Council for the Study UK Alumni awards. He is the scientific and organizing director of the International Conference organized every 3 years on “Intermodal Transports: Innovation in Planning, Management, Business Development & Decision Making”.

Dr. Maria SARTZETAKI: Maria Sartzetaki educational qualifications include Doctorate (PhD) in transport infrastructure economics and management from Democritus University of Thrace, (Department of Economics), MSc in airports economics from Cranfield University (UK); MSc in Planning, Organizing and Managing Transportation Systems; and Diploma (equivalent to 4 years BA and 1-year MSc) in Civil Engineering (transportation sector). Her professional profile focused on transport systems planning, management and economics and especially on aviation industry. Her research contribution including more than 100 publications in scientific missions, journals, international conferences, and workshops. She also has contributed in 5 research projects with universities. In addition, she has contributed in organizing committees in international conferences and scientific missions, and as being member of working group on the subject of Aviation and Regional development of the COST European Framework Programme ATARD, she received in 2016 and 2017 Grant (Short Time Scientific Mission) for research activities and lecturing in Worms University/Germany. In her professional truck record are included occupation of advisory positions in sector of transport, special studies in sector of transport and consulting in a variety of subjects on transport infrastructure. She has experience in executive advisory positions to transport authorities and organizations management, providing subject matter expertise in fields business development and management. She is advisor to Athens International Airport (since February 2016) and she was executive advisor to ERGOSE (2015-2016) and senior advisor to the BoD of Athens Transports Organisation (2011-2012). She has contributed in international and national institutions and professional associations (ICAO, COST/EU,GARS, TCG, HITE, HELORS, HAS, etc.) and she is member in relevant professional associations. She is special secretary of the Board of Hellenic Institute of transportation engineers and responsible Editor of the professional magazine. His professional achievements and experience has been acknowledged nationally and internationally, and for 2018 he awarded by the Professional Achievement Award (2017/2018) in Greece by the British Council for the Study UK Alumni awards. In addition, she participates in the organizing committee of the International Conference that is held every 3 years on “Intermodal Transports: Innovation in Planning, Management, Business Development & Decision Making”.

Aristi KARAGKOUNI: Aristi Karagkouni is a PhD candidate in the Department of Economics at Democritus University of Thrace. Her educational background includes Diploma (equivalent to 4 years BA and 1-year MSc) in Civil Engineering (transportation sector). She has been interning at Athens International Airport. She has participated in 11 publications in scientific missions, journals, international conferences, and workshops. In addition, he has contributed to the organization of 2 scientific conferences (8th European Aviation Conference (EAC) and Workshop on Air Transport, Tourism, Connectivity and Regional Development). In addition, she participates in the organizing committee of the International Conference that is held every 3 years on “Intermodal Transports: Innovation in Planning, Management, Business Development & Decision Making”.
