Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh) established in July 1973 and accepted its first students in the academic year 1974–1975. It is based in Komotini, Greece and has campuses in the Thracian cities of Xanthi, Komotini, Alexandroupoli and Orestiada. The first departments to operate were the Department of Law and the Department of Civil Engineering. It was named after Democritus, the ancient Greek philosopher who hailed from the town of Abdera in Thrace. It is one of the largest Universities in the country in terms of active student population with 8 Schools, 18 Departments, and a multitude of Postgraduate Programs, with a student population of approximately 29,000 (undergraduate students, postgraduate students and PhD candidates) and with more than 700 research and teaching staff, is the only university institution in the Region of Eastern Macedonia – Thrace. In a highly changing environment, DUTh continues to focus on both education and research excellence while building on the challenges and imperatives of the future. It redefines its research strategy based on innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, the new digital age, large-scale development as well as attracting funding from stakeholders both domestically and abroad. The stigma of DUTH today he is awarded with his innovative postgraduate degree programs internationally, but also with initiatives that allow him to overcome modern bureaucracy and geographical exclusion.
